T: CM, Botsa to be consulted
With the Telangana statehood demand becoming more strident with each passing day, the Congress central leadership will elicit the opinions of Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana and take a decision on whet-her to make an announcement on the issue.
Sources close to the CM said that the central Congress Core Committee will deliberate on the issue after conclusion of the ongoing Budget Sessions of both Parliament and the AP Assembly. However, it is not clear what exactly the Congress central leadership has in mind. The Congress leadership had earlier discussed the issue more than a dozen times and had come to the conclusion that a separate Telangana state is not possible at this stage due to lack of consensus among the political parties in the state.
The leadership was expected to announce its decision on the issue last January, but this was put off due to Assembly elections in five states. Other factors contributing to the postponement of an announcement were the former Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati’s challenge to the Centre on the division of UP into four states and the request by some Telangana Congress MPs not to say “No” to the statehood demand as the party was to face byelections in the state.
