T-decision needed: Vayalar

When asked specifically about the demand put forth by some partymen to change both the Chief Minister and the PCC chief, Union minister Vayalar Ravi said, “Change of CM and PCC chief is not on our agenda. If there is a change that will be another problem the party has to face. Anyway, we are not going into that issue.”

He said that AP has been a special case always for the Congress as it used to contribute more than 30 MPs to the UPA kitty. “But after YSR’s demise, it is an open fact that the Congress government and the party are facing problems for the last few years. We will overcome them.” Mr Ravi said both the state government and the state party unit should work together and take decisions that would benefit all the people of AP.

He admitted that the Telangana statehood issue and Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy’s challenge to the party were the two real problems for the party in the state. “There is need to immediately take a decision on the Telangana statehood issue, otherwise the problem will be further compounded. The issue is being seriously analysed at the AICC level. Similarly, there is a threat from Jagan’s party. Congressmen should now unite. They know that unless they do that, there is no future for them. My job is to see that all are united and wage a fight against the threats. I know all Congressmen want to strengthen the party and the government,” he said.

Mr Ravi said no effort will be made to woo Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy back to the Congress fold. “That is not true - according to the thinking of the AICC, there is no question of wooing him back. We have decided to fight against him in all respects.” Referring to the forthcoming bypolls, Mr Ravi said, “My main purpose is to get the party ready to face the challenge. We have to win at least some seats to save face. I am hopeful that we will get a good number of seats.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
