T-moves gather pace in OU
The Telangana movement has begun to gather steam again on the Osmania University campus after several months. Hectic activity is going on, on the campus to revive the agitation from the last week of this month ahead of the “Telangana march” on September 30. College-wise and hostel-wise meetings are being held on a massive scale to muster support from all students to intensify the T-agitation as in 2009, which forced the Centre to make a statement on Telangana on December 9, 2009.
Sensing trouble, the police has beefed up security on the campus. The presence of a heavy police force at the entry and exit gates of the OU campus has been missing for several months with the campus remaining peaceful since Sept. 2011 following the ‘Sakala Janula Samme’. However, scores of policemen, ‘Vajra’ vehicles, and anti-riot vehicles used to fire tear-gas shells are seen near the campus of late.
In the run-up to the Telangana march, OU students took out a procession from Manikeshwarin-agar to RTC crossroads last Sunday. They also staged a one-day hunger strike on September 11 demanding the withdrawal of all cases against those who took part in T-agitations. The stir sparked tension when balladeer Gaddar was stopped by the police when he tried to enter the campus to support them. OU students have also called for a ‘Chalo Hyderabad’ march on September 27 to gear up for the Telangana agitation. However, the new developments on the campus have become a cause of concern for OU officials who fear disruption of academic activities. The postponement of exams and delay in declaration of results became a common pheno-menon at OU since Novem-ber 2009 due to the stirs on the campus.
The academic schedule normalised only recently with the university conducting exams and releasing results on time since the last academic year. The new academic year has just begun and it is hardly a month since the fresh batch of students started attending classes.
