Test candidates face engineered chaos

There was a chaos among students who took the offline mode of the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) in the state on Sunday. Struck in traffic jams in Warangal and Guntur and unable to locate exam centres due to incorrect details on hall tickets, thousands of AIEEE aspirants faced several hardships to write the exams.

Hundreds of students reached the exam centres late by over half-an hour. Officials allowed students into the exam centres even when they were late, but finished the exam on time. The CBSE's decision to set up offline exam centres in Warangal, Guntur and Tirupati for the entire state in order to encourage students to opt for online exam later backfired, with nearly one lakh students from cities opting for the offline exam. Out of 1.25 lakh students registered for AIEEE exam from AP, about 1 lakh opted for offline exam and only 25,000 for online exam to be held in Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam on May 7, 12, 19 and 26.

Students from 10 districts in the Telangana region accompanied by parents and guardians made a beeline in Warangal by trains, RTC buses, taxis, cars etc, for the exam. Since Warangal was the only centre for entire Telangana region, about 75,000 students, mostly from Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts, had been arriving in the city since the early hours of Sunday. There were traffic jams, leaving students struck for hours ahead of the exam. A similar situation prevailed in Guntur, where a large number of students from Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Ongole thronged the city, which was identified for the entire Andhra region as the exam centre.

Despite an option for students from Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam to opt for online exam later, about one lakh students from these places rushed to Warangal, Guntur and Tirupati to appear for the offline exam due to fears of technical glitches. Parents and students expressed shock over the CBSE's decision to allot offline exam centres only in Warangal, Guntur and Tirupati for the state.
