TRS fears T-rally may turn violent
The announcement by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) of a ‘Chalo Hyderabad’ Telangana march on September 30 has created consternation among leaders of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS).
The announcement by the newly elected TNGO general secretary, Mr K. Ravinder Reddy, that employees will support the march has only added to the problem. Though the TJAC and TRS leaders deny there are any differences between them, the Telangana march has driven a wedge in their relationship. TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao is reportedly keen on postponing the rally and waiting for the Centre’s decision on a separate statehood.
The party is worried that there may be violence and clashes with the police as in the last Million March when a dozen statues of eminent personalities were destroyed on the Tank Bund. A member of the TRS politburo said Mr Rao is confident of achieving statehood for Telangana through the political process and other pressure tactics, but is against indulging in violence since the government could take advantage and suppress the movement through force.
Ever since the TJAC announced the Chalo Hyderabad march, the TRS leadership has been trying to keep it in abeyance but without much success. TJAC chairman, Prof Kodandaram says the march will go ahead. “There is no change in our programme. We are going ahead with Chalo Hyderabad on September 30,” he said.
