Two held for selling monitor lizards
On Sunday, the state Anti-Poaching Cell took a 35-year-old woman and her brother into custody at Lingampally for possessing seven monitor lizards.
A. Yadamma and her brother, A. Ganesh, both residents of Lingampally, were trying to sell the monitor lizards in the fish market when they were caught.
Anti-Poaching Cell officers said a case would be slapped on both of them, after interrogation, under the Wild Life Protection Act.
“Possessing monitor lizards is an offence. Though we are yet to find out from where Yadamma got these lizards, a case will be registered on both of them,” said V. Thirumal Rao, forest range officer, Anti-Poaching Cell.
Monitor lizards are consumed in parts of south India and Malaysia, as their meat is said to increase sexual desire. With the increasing demand, these lizards are sold for high prices.
