US varsity fraud hits 400 from AP
In a repeat of the Tri-Valley University visa scam last year, the US Federal authorities on Friday raided Herguan University in Sunnyvale in the United States and charged its CEO Jerry Wang with visa fraud.
Nearly 400 students — 90 per cent of the 450 students — enrolled in the university are from Andhra Pradesh.
US authorities will make an official announcement about their immigration status on Saturday.
The university offers degrees in computer science and business. It was granted Federal approval in 2008 to accept foreign students.
The university has been charged with four counts of visa fraud, four false document counts, two counts of aggravated identity theft, and one count of unauthorised access to a government computer.
A student from Hyderabad, who did not want to be named said, “We have been asked to wait for 15 days. If there is no change in the situation by then, we have been told to opt for another university or leave the country.”
