Vatti leaves CM uncomfortable

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy’s apprehensions about defending the contentious 26 GOs issued during YSR’s regime came true on Tuesday even before a full-fledged debate on the Supreme Court notices to ministers and IAS officers was taken up in the Assembly.

Much to the discomfort of the Chief Minister, tourism minister V. Vasanth Kumar interrupted an on-going discussion in the Assembly and fully supported the SC orders that he said were issued within the framework of rules and procedures. Condemning the Telugu Desam for its efforts to portray that the state had lost heavily because of the GOs, the minister added that the government would stand by the decisions taken by the YSR government in issuing the Government Orders.

“We will also not withdraw these orders,” Mr Vasanth Kumar said. Sources in the ruling party meanwhile said the Chief Minister had not been keen on making the government's stand known on these orders as defending them would weaken the argument that Kadapa MP Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy had amassed wealth illegally due to the decisions of the YSR government. The sources added that Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy had spoken to the ministers who had been served the notices and had asked them not to issue any statements defending the GOs.

Mr Vasanth Kumar also sought to downplay the petition filed in the Supreme Court by an advocate from Nellore, saying that it was not maintainable. He referred to various earlier apex court judgments that laid down procedure for petitioners to seek justice if they had complaints against any investigating agency.
Mr Vasanth Kumar said that the petitioner should first file a complaint with the investigating agency and appeal to the superior officers in the second stage. “The petitioner can approach the courts only after exhausting the first two options,” he added.
Interestingly the Chief Minister, who was visibly irritated when the minister tried to intervene again, signaled legislative affairs minister D. Sridhar Babu to rein in Mr Vasanth Kumar.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
