Water release raises heat, MP resigns
Nandyal Congress MP S.P.Y Reddy submitted his resignation on Friday to protest the government's action of releasing waters from Srisailam dam to the downstream Nagarjun-asagar through power houses.
The MP submitted his resignation to the Lok Sabha Speaker when news came of the Srisailam Dam authorities releasing one TMC ft of water to downstream Nagarjunasagar.
“Yes I did so. It is against the assurance given to me by the Chief Minister. I do not want to withdraw my letter unless specific assurances are given to the people of my constituency who are suffering from water scarcity,” Mr Reddy told this correspondent.
He said that when he had discussed the Srisailam issue with the CM two days ago, Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy had assured him that the government would not release waters to the Nagarjunasagar Dam and would wait for the levels to rise beyond 845 feet so that water was first released to Pothireddypadu and then to the NS dam. “But the dam authorities released the waters today. Being a local MP, I have to rise to the occasion,” he said.
There is an acute shortage of Krishna waters this Kharif season in all the three regions in the state.
Meanwhile the level at the Nagarjunasagar dam fell below 510 feet on Friday.
The AP High Court had ordered that water from NS should not be released if the level fell below 510 feet. Unless the water level is maintained at the 510 feet level, the capital's drinking water needs too will be affected
