Read the signs carefully
Ever wondered why your hamster rolls on his back or what your rabbit is trying to tell you by grinding his teeth? Animals have their own way of communicating with humans. Sometimes, they use the most obvious signals and at other times they do funny things just to get our attention.
Vet Lohith says that every pet has a different way of communicating with their owner. “With a dog, every bark is different. Sometimes, even the same signs are different for different owners.”
Rahul H, an analyst says that his dog knows how to get his attention. “I knew exactly what she wanted just with the look in her eyes. Every dog has a different look. And wagging one’s tail does not always mean that she is happy. Sometimes, she gets ferocious when she wags her tail super hard. It means ‘I’ll playfully bite you hard if you touch my face,’” he laughs.
Smaller animals are no different. Hamsters who are just restricted to their cage communicate too. “My hamster, Castor runs around in circles and does these very entertaining back flips. I couldn’t understand what they meant. It’s only much later, and after observing his movements carefully, I figured that it’s indicative of his mood. It usually means that he is just really happy to see me,” giggles Rima B., proud owner of two hamsters.
It might be a little more difficult to decode what your cat is trying to tell you. But, even these feline creatures know how to communicate when they are in need. Cats do not vocalise, but they use different sounds to tell their owner what they want. “If cats wag their tail, it means they’re angry, not happy,” says Sahana S, who has had cats all her life. “One of my cats is a timid creature. It took her almost two years to get comfortable with me. Even while lapping up her milk, she used to keep one eye on the door,” she adds.
For the feathered variety, especially a parrot, it couldn’t be easier. Of course, they won’t tell you outright if they are in pain or if they want to be let out of their cage. But, you will know what the bird is trying to tell you just by the flapping of their wings. “I have a dog, cat and a parrot. It’s usually really easy for me to know what the parrot is up to. He imitates my dog and cat all the time,” says Muriel.i
