‘14 colleges did not have proper staff’

Investigation by the CBI into the corruption charges involving Medical Council of India president Ketan Desai has revealed that at least 14 colleges, where non-medical staff were paraded as medical staff during the council’s inspection, were granted permission to continue with their courses.

Sources said that the investigation has revealed that certain medical colleges continued to get permission to continue and also increase the number of courses without having proper teaching (medical) staff. At least 14 colleges produced non-medical staff in place of regular teaching staff during the inspections, sources said, adding that the top administration members of these colleges were also being questioned by the investigating officials.
“If required, the investigating agency may request the authority concerned to initiate action against such colleges. Investigations have revealed that the terms and conditions for granting permission to the colleges for increasing the number of courses were overlooked by the MCI’s inspection team”, sources. revealed.
Officials say that guidelines were violated by Desai and his team members even in granting permission for introducing diploma courses in certain medical colleges.
