‘Buddha didn’t admit to armed camp presence’
A day after West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee agreed with home minister P. Chidambaram that “armed’’ camps in the Marxist-ruled state need to be disarmed and demobilised, the CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat refused to acknowledge Mr Bhattacharjee’s remarks. “He did not say this,” Mr Karat said on Thursday when he was asked about Mr Bhattacharjee’s acceptance of presence of armed camps in the state.
The West Bengal chief minister on Wednesday admitted that “armed groups exist in some areas” of Bengal and promised to disarm them.
“I agreed on two points. Government is firm on disarming all armed groups including those in Jangalmahal. Secondly, Netai was raised and I told Mr Chidambaram that CID is investigating and we have to ensure this is not repeated,” Mr Bhattacharjee said on Wednesday, following his meeting with the home minister and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Mr Karat also said that his party does not recognise the word ‘’harmad’’, which had been used by Mr Chidambaram in his letter to Mr Bhattacharjee describing the ‘’armed camps’’ in the state. “Harmad is a term which is coined and used by the Trinamul,” Mr Karat said.
