‘Cong facing double anti-incumbency’
BJP leader Arun Jaitley said here on Monday that the ruling Congress was facing the wave of double anti-incumbency in the ensuing Assembly elections in Assam.
Mr Jaitley, who slammed the Congress ministers for excessive show off wealth in the elections, told reporters, “The Congress is going to lose a significant number of seats as this election was being held under special circumstances when both at the Centre and the state, Congress party is in the government.”
He said, “Not only has the Congress-led UPA government become unpopular due to scams and corruption, but also the government in Assam has faced flak for rampant corruption.”
Price rise and food inflation has affected the day to day life of common people who are all set to exercise their vote for change, the leader said.
Referring to his election campaign in Upper Assam district, Mr Jaitley said, “The way Congress was pumping in black money into the elections, it shows the level of corruption during the Gogoi-government.”
Commenting on the nomination of Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday, he said, “It was an ugly and vulgar display of wealth.”
Mr Jaitley who is in the state to support the party candidate however clarified that he is campaigning to increase BJP’s presence in order to influence the policies of the state government.
He alleged that the Congress had done nothing in the region and whatever development the Congress claimed was initiated when the BJP-led NDA was in power at the Centre.
Referring the natural resources of the state like tea, oil, coal and water, Mr Jaitley said that these resources were not tapped in the appropriate manner for the benefit of the people.
He also alleged that the Congress has failed to solve the flood and erosion problem caused by the Brahmaputra river. It has also refused to appreciate the people's opposition to the construction of mega dams.
Referring to the agitation of NGOs and RTI activists against the Congress party, Mr jaitley said that the former was trying to shoot the messenger instead of appreciating the message.
