‘Cops must protect couples’
Amidst spate of honour killings being reported from Delhi, Haryana and western UP, officials maintain that though they can not be fully averted, some preventive steps could be initiated to bring such cases down, with the police playing a proactive role in association with community leaders.
In the region of western UP, Delhi and Haryana, at least 30 people have died in cases of honour killings in the past 18 months, with activists saying that dozens of cases of intimidation and torture of young couples have been recorded in the same period as well.
Though Delhi is not among the seven states whom the Supreme Court recently sent notice on the issue of the honour killings, three honour killing deaths in the capital have brought the spotlight on to Delhi also, with the chief minister, Sheila Dikshit, on Tuesday issuing a clear instructions to the police to be extra vigilant.
“Delhi police should give protection to couples who marry outside their gotra or their community,” Ms Dikshit stated. She also added that police protection of such couples is the only way to curb such cases in future to come.
“It is basically a social problem but still the police can definitely do something. To begin with, the police can begin preparing crime profile of each of the districts and find out cases of honour killings being reported from there. Based on the profile, the police can identify areas for preventive action,” said a senior official of Delhi government.
