‘EC turning blind eye to conspiracy’
Disappointed over the massive misuse of government machinery, the opposition Asom Gana Parishad here on Sunday accused that the Election Commission of India has been reduced into a paper tiger as far as ensuing elections in Assam is concerned.
Former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta told reporters, “We have specific information that influential Congress minister Rockybul Hussain is hatching a conspiracy in connivance with lower and middle rank officials to organize bogus polling in Samaguri assembly areas on Monday by casting votes of electorates who do not turn up to caste their votes”. He said that Election Commission officials have been informed, but so far, they seem reluctant to take action on the complaints. “We also informed about the distribution of cash by a Congress minister, but in most of the cases, sector officers reached late deliberately”, he said adding that the Election Commission should intervene immediately. Mr Mahanta also accused that observers of the Commission had failed to keep any control over the expenditure of the ruling party candidates, especially ministers.
Judging by the way helicopters and a large number of vehicles were used for campaigning by the ruling party, a majority of its candidates had crossed the expenditure limit, but the Commission failed to take any effective measures, he said. The failure in busting the conspiracy of bogus polling may prove to be counter-productive in central Assam as people are already unhappy over the role of administration, he claimed.
