‘Govt has active agenda for Parliament’
Identifying a few of the important bills including the much talked about National Food Security Bill, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has said the government has a “very active agenda” for Parliament in the coming months. She has also heaped praise for AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi for his intervention in the proposed project at Niyamgiri in Orissa, where he had promised tribals that their interests would not be sacrificed in pursuit of developing natural resources.
In her “Letter to Congresspersons” in the latest issue of the party mouthpiece Congress Sandesh, Mrs Gandhi said, “The government has a very active agenda for Parliament in the coming months.” She said the Land Acquisition Bill, a new Food Security Bill, changes in income-tax to benefit individuals and companies while at the same time providing dynamic revenues, and strong protection for whistleblowers are in the pipeline. All of these proposed legislations, with far-reaching ramifications have already been announced, she added.
Referring to the Nuclear Liability Bill, which was passed in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Mr Gandhi said, “This is important not just for India to engage in nuclear commerce with the world but also to put in place an act that will hold the parties concerned responsible for the accident.” Recounting the sufferings of the people in the tragic Bhopal gas leak case, the Congress leader said, “The country can not afford such a disaster. We must now look to the future and how we can best take care of the victims.”
Meanwhile, praising the young Gandhi, the Congress chief said, “We need to ensure that sustainable development and employment reach people whose voice is now being heard.”
She said the Congress party’s commitment to welfare of the underprivileged and weaker sections was reinforced after “the decision to protect the Niyamgiri region from mining by Rahul”, who assured the tribal people that their fundamental interests would not be sacrificed in pursuit of developing natural resources.
Referring to the illegal mining in Karnataka, she said the Congress has taken the lead in exposing corruption and devastation caused by illegal mining in the state.
She said party workers have carried out a successful march to Bellary district and hoped that Congress members in other regions of the country will also play a major role in exposing illegal activities that affect the environment and livelihoods of the villagers.
