‘India can progress only if Bihar does’

Standing in his front row seat, RJD MP Lalu Prasad Yadav who often manages to grab attention thanks to his inimitable “style”, managed to do so once again on Tuesday. His speech generated some moments of amusement too for the other MPs not only because of its content but also the verbal duel he was engaged in with another MP from Bihar, Ranjan Prasad Yadav of the JD(U) who asked him who was responsible for Bihar’s lack of progress.

Making a stirring case for the progress of the state he belongs to and where he has not fared too well in either the Lok Sabha or Assembly elections of late, the RJD leader and former Union railway minister said that the country would progress only if Bihar did.
Taking a swipe at the present chief minister of Bihar, Mr Prasad said, “Nitishji ne kaha hai ki hum Bihar ko 2015 tak vikasit rajya bana denge (Nitish Kumar has said that by 2015 we will make Bihar a developed state). He then added for good measure,” Unke pas machine hai, woh dekhte rehte hain (he has a machine, he keeps checking) to the great mirth of the MPs present in the House.
Praising those from his state for working hard by plying rickshaws, push-carts and by working in places as diverse as Mauritius and Libya and Singapore, the RJD leader then said that people from Bihar work as labourers and and earn money for the country. He then wondered where this monety earned by people from his state went.
?Where is this money saved? For who’s progress is this money spent?” he asked. Complaining that this “credit” which was due to people from Bihar, which is deposited in the Reserve Bank of India is not spent on progress for Bihar. Demanding that the RBI be “decentralised”, he also asked that Bihar should get the “credit” (money) that is its due.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
