‘People of India & Arunachal’: Jairam gaffe?
Environment and forests minister Jairam Ramesh on Thursday said that the challenge before the government is to draw the maximum possible benefit from Arunachal Prad-esh, which has a hydel capacity of over 15,000 megawatts, so that “both the people of Arunachal Pradesh and people of India also benefit’’. Mr Ramesh said that Arunachal Pradesh has over 15,000 megawatts of hydel capacity.
“The challenge for us is to develop the maximum possible element in this capacity in such a manner that both the people of Arunachal Pradesh and people of India also benefit’’. Mr Ramesh’s remark referring Arunachal Pradesh and India separately invited objection from Brinda Karat who said that Arunachal Pradesh is also a part of India.
However, Ms Karat’s remarks possibly went unheard by the minister since this was his last sentence on clarifications to a calling attention motion in the Rajya Sabha on the environmental impact of big dams in the north-eastern region.
