‘Telangana issue being looked into’
Denying there was any proposal before the government for creation of new states, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said demands for a separate Telangana are being looked into by a committee headed by Justice B.N. Srikrishna.
The PM refused to comment on the issue of creation of new states in the country pending the receipt of the report of the said committee. “There is no such proposal for creation of states before the government,” the PM said.
The PM said that the issue of creation of Telangana has been referred to a committee under a very distinguished former judge of the Supreme Court Justice B.N. Srikrishna. “Pending the receipt of the report it will be difficult for me to offer any comments,” he said. The remarks became significant as there have been demands from various parties and organisations for creation of smaller states in the country. This followed the Centre’s announcement in December 2009 that it would initiate steps for the formation of a separate state of Telangana. Later, the Centre had said that there was a need for holding “wide-ranging consultations” following protests in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra regions over Centre’s decision on Telangana.
