‘UIDAI back end office of NPR’
Rejecting the view that with the launch of creating a National Population Register (NPR) containing biometric details of individuals, the role of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) would only be duplicating the job, UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani on Tuesday said, his organisation is working as the back-end office for NPR exercise.
“We have standardised the biometrics details, we will provide software for the purpose, as Registrar General of India is our biggest partner. We will work as a back-end office to just generate 12-digit unique ID numbers based on the data with biometrics details are provided to us,” Dr Nilekani said after the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on UIDAI (CC-UIDAI), chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
In the meeting the government gave in-principle its approval for adoption of “standardised” approach for collection of demographic and biometrics attributes, including iris scan, of residents by various bodies including NPR for UID project.
To provide unique ID numbers to all Indian residents, the UIDAI proposes to source data through various agencies of Central and state governments and others who, in normal course of their activities, interact with residents.

A year after enraging Bihar’s ruling JD(U) by her obliquely derogatory public comments linking chief minister Nitish Kumar and the then JD(U) state president Rajiv Ranjan Singh aka Lallan Singh, former chief minister and Opposition leader Rabri Devi of the RJD on Tuesday secured bail by surrendering at a court in Chapra.
Her presence at the court of chief judicial magistrate Yogendra Narayan Singh, in response to a non-bailable warrant of arrest issued against her on May 6, drew a large crowd around the court and on the street eager to get a glimpse of her. Ms Rabri Devi was granted regular bail by the court.
She invited trouble for herself in April 2009 when the JD(U) approached both, the Election Commission and then the judiciary seeking action against her for her remarks.
