‘Water stagnant in Village towers’
MCD officials have claimed that there is still water in the second-level basements of nearly 25 towers in the Commonwealth Games Village. The Delhi government had earlier maintained that the water from the basement had been flushed out.
Talking to this newspaper, chairman of the MCD health committee, Mr V.K. Monga, said that water was still there in the second level of the basement in about 25 towers. There are 34 towers in the Village. “We are spraying anti-larval medicines everyday to ensure that mosquito breeding does not take place. The sub-soil water and drainage water is reaching into the basement. We are trying to keep things in control,” said Mr Monga.
The health committee chief added that the MCD was also carrying out anti-larval measures in the areas between the Metro and the railway tracks on the Yamuna river bed. “This area too is filled with water. So, we need to keep a check on mosquito breeding conditions,” said Mr Monga. The MCD is also spraying insecticides in various stadia to prevent moths from spoiling the show when the events take place under lights.
The issue of waterlogged basements of the Games Village had raised serious concerns over its liveability and the Delhi government had to deploy personnel from the MCD and the New Delhi Municipal Council to flush out water from these basements.
While it was initially believed to be on account of heavy rain and no proper system to drain off the rain water in the village that was still being completed, later it was realised that it was the sub-soil water that was coming into these basements leading to problems.
As the Yamuna crossed the danger mark and the flood water reached very close to the Games Village bundh, the activity of sub-soil water reaching into the Village basements increased.
However, now Yamuna has receded and the activity seems to have slowed down. But MCD officials claimed that the problems remained. The Delhi government and even the Commonwealth Games Federation officials had maintained that water from the basements have been flushed out.
