‘Will consult locals opposing N-plant’
New Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Sunday said that he would reach out to local people opposing the proposed nuclear power plant in Jaitapur and ensure that they get proper compensation.
“You cannot take resettlement for granted. The project-affected people must be duly compensated,” Mr Chavan said replying to questions on the protests against the Jaitapur plan in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.
Mr Chavan said the state government along with officials of the department of atomic energy and popular leaders like Mr Narayan Rane will lead an initiative to convince the people of the region on the necessity of the project.

Adarsh has tarnished state: CM
Age correspondent
New Delhi
Nov. 14: The Maharashtra chief minister on Sunday said that the Adarsh scam has tarnished the image of the state. “There is no doubt about the fact that the Adarsh controversy has sullied Maharashtra’s image. An atmosphere of disillusionment has crept in among the common people. There is cynicism that nothing good will happen at the hands of politicians,” the CM said. The Congress high command had asked Ashok Chavan to step down from the CM’s post because of allegations against him in the Adarsh society scam and asked Prithviraj Chavan to take charge in Maharashtra. The new CM has also come with high command’s order to take tough decisions to rebuild public confidence in the state government.
Former CM Ashok Chavan, while stepping down, had said that he would come out clean once the investigation into the Adarsh scam by the Congress leaders are over.
Mr Prithviraj Chavan said that political leaders cannot get away by saying that an inquiry is on and that the culprit would be eventually punished. The common people’s perception is that politicians use this “not guilty unless proven” theory too far and use it as a defence. “In politics, perception is important. If people are to trust you...it is all about the perception people have of you,” he said.
