10 more CBI cases related to CWG?
The CBI, probing various cases in the conduct of the Commonwealth Games (CWG), is likely to register at least 10 more FIRs based on the findings of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG)’s report on the CWG, tabled in Parliament on Friday.
The agency has also decided to convert its preliminary enquiry (PE), registered to probe irregularities in awarding contract (worth `71.8 crores) related to the appointment of a Switzerland-based company as technical consultant for the games, into a regular case, sources said. Besides, the CBI, which is already probing irregularities in “overlays” contracts (worth `640 crores), has decided to send letter of requests (LRs) to authorities concerned in Switzerland, France and Hong Kong to get details about certain overseas companies.
A high-ranking official of the agency said, “The CAG report on CWG, which has been tabled in Parliament, is now being analysed by the CBI officials. The CAG, in its report, has highlighted apparent irregularities in certain contracts, which need to be probed by the CBI.” On the basis of new evidence which has emerged following the CAG report, the agency is likely to register at least 10 more cases, sources added.
“The agency may register fresh FIRs in connection with irregularities committed in contract related to catering, ticketing, sponsorship and games news service (GNS). Besides, fresh cases may be registered in certain contracts awarded by the Delhi government, Delhi Development Authority, New Delhi Municipal Council and other government departments,” sources said.
Sources said the OC was supposed to collect an estimated amount of `100 crores from the sale of tickets itself. However, the initial probe has found that the OC managed to collect only `39 crores from ticket sales.
There are reports that certain government agencies, engaged in executing works for the CWG, considered inadmissible factors to jack up the reasonable price and justify the award of work at high rates, which will be probed by the CBI after registering FIR, sources added.
Several agencies took up the work of street-scaping, especially kerb stone and footpath tiles, without ascertaining the need for such an upgradation, they added. The main purpose of aesthetics could not be achieved due to poor quality control and lack of supervision, sources said.
