`1,000-crore scam continues to rock Assam
The Central Bureau of Investigation has not received any communication from the Assam government to expand their investigation to probe the alleged misappropriation of fund in all the departments of North Cachar Hills District of Assam.
Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who was denying involvement of his government in `1,000 crore NC Hills scam while claiming that report of accountant general was not complete, has announced that his government has decided to hand-over investigation of all the departments to the CBI.
Disclosing that investigating agency, probing scam in five specific projects of the council, is yet to summon any minister of the state, an authoritative source in the CBI told this newspaper that investigation was progressing well and soon they would be filing the charge sheet in five projects of the district council.
He, however, said that if more cases are handed over to the CBI, investigation into five projects might have to be clubbed together. The CBI was probing only five specific projects, which were recommended by the NIA for a separate investigation by the CBI.
The Assam government was reluctant to hand-over entire investigation to the CBI into `1000 crore scam of the district council which took a new turn after this newspaper on November 22 published the inspection report of the accountant general indicting the Assam government into misappropriation of more than ` 400 crore in 26 months only.
Since the AG report came to light, the Opposition political parties of the state are agitating for dismissal of Mr Gogoi government. In an obvious attempt to placate the growing charges of corruption, Mr Gogoi announced that he has asked the chief secretary Mr Naba Kumar Das to take up the matter with the CBI to take over investigation into all the departments of the council. Meanwhile, state government sources said that Assam chief secretary would be writing a formal letter to the CBI in a day or two also to take over investigation into anomalies pointed out by AG in its inspection report of the special audit of NC Hills accounts.
