10,000 cops for Chennai on Independence Day
Chennai: Tension prevailed at the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu on Sunday night after a hoax bomb threat was received by the city police control room.
The bomb detection squad checked all the nooks and corners of the terminus before declaring the premises explosive free on Monday morning.
The unidentified caller contacted the control room, using a mobile phone, and warned that bombs would go off at CMBT.
The mobile phone was traced to Muruganandham, (24), a temple priest at Varadaraja Perumal Temple in Vadapalani who reportedly told the police that he had lost it two weeks ago.About 100 people at the bus stand were detained for checking by Anna Nagar Deputy Commissioner Xavier Dhanraj and Inspector Sam Vincent and BDDS personnel.
Meanwhile, sources said that Central Intelligence agencies had named four cities, Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Nagapattinam as being vulnerable prior to Independence Day celebrations.
In Chennai alone, nearly 10,000 police personnel will be deployed on August 15. Security has already been beefed up at Fort St George.
