Hyderabad: The Medical Council of India (MCI) on Monday approved a women’s medical college for the city for the 2013-14 academic year. This is the first non-minority medical college in the state exclusively for girl students.
Besides, the MCI permitted a slew of colleges to increase their intake by 50 students each. In all, the MCI has added 1,050 seats to the existing 5,500 seats in the state, taking the total to 6,550. Sources said that more seats are likely to be added till the end of July.
The MCI granted 150 MBBS seats in Malla Reddy Medical College for Women at Suraram near Jeedimetla, which will be included in the Eamcet medical counselling set to commence shortly.
This year, out of 1 lakh applicants for Eamcet medical stream, over 70,000 were girls, who will benefit from the new women’s medical college. The MCI had rejected approval for the college last month citing ‘infrastructural deficiencies’. However, it granted the approval after the management rectified the deficiencies pointed out by MCI.
The city has the Dr VRK Women’s Medical College in Aziznagar, but it is meant only for girls from minority categories. The addition of these seats will solve the problem of severe shortage of MBBS seats in the state to some extent.
The MCI has increased the intake by 50 seats each in Alluri Sitarama Raju Academy of Medical Sciences (Eluru), Andhra Medical College (Vizag), Gandhi Medical College (Hyderabad), Kakatiya Medical College (Warangal) and Katuri Medical College (Guntur).
MCI approves 3 new medical colleges in AP
Other medical colleges where 50 seats were increased in the state are: Kurnool Medical College (Kurnool), Maharajah Institute of Medical Sciences (Vizianagaram), Medicity Institute of Medical Sciences (Ghanpur), Osmania Medical College (Hyderabad), Rangaraya Medical College (Kakinada), SV Medical College (Tirupati), SVS Medical College (Mahbubnagar) and Siddhartha Medical College (Vijayawada).
Besides, the Medical Council of India has approved a new government medical college in Nizamabad with an intake of 100 seats and two new private colleges, namely Malla Reddy Medical College for Women (Suraram) and Kamineni Institute of Medical Sciences (LB Nagar), both in Hyderabad by 150 seats.
The approvals for three new private medical colleges, are still pending with the Medical Council of India. The colleges are Maheshwara Medical College and TRR Medical College, both in Patancheru, and Viswa Bharathi Medical College in Kurnool. The chances of these colleges getting approval are almost nil.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
