12-year girl takes bullets to save dad

May 3: In a rare act of bravery, 12-year-old Gunja took bullets on her chest to save her father from goons in Varanasi district. She was admitted to hospital and is now stable.

The police said this happened at Madao village, in the Rohania police circle, when some goons tried to stop Gunja and her father Panna Yadav from taking mud from a village pond, owned by the local gram sabha, to repair their house.
When Panna Yadav refused to listen, the goons opened fire. Gunja saw the men loading their guns and tried to shield her father, getting hit in the chest. The goons, who owe allegiance to Chandrama Singh, fled.
