‘128 days of water stock’
With just 77.55 per cent rainfall in the lake catchment areas so far, and a stock for only four months left in six lakes, an acute water shortage is in the offing.
The civic body has pulled up its socks to tackle the situation and is running from pillar to post to ensure that
people face least inconvenience.
In a statement made before the civic standing committee on Wednesday, additional municipal commissioner M.M. Adtani said, “The water stored in lakes along with the reserved stock is available for 124 days. We are hoping considerable amount of rainfall in the remaining days of July and the next review will be taken on August 1.”
According to the civic officials, the water stock available in six lakes – Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vehar, Tulsi, Upper Vaitarana and Bhatsa – is 3.78 lakh million litres (ml), which is only 62 per cent as compared to last year.
In 2011, the supply was almost double with 6.08 lakh ml stock in lakes.
The water levels in lakes have been low due to the scanty rainfall, which is only 77.55 per cent this year as compared to the average rainfall in last nine years.
Adding to the misery, the Upper Vaitarana and Bhatsa lakes, which supply maximum water to the city, have received only 69.87 and 73.76 per cent rainfall so far.
Mr Adtani said, “Apart from taking other measures, we have also made a list of fag end areas, which are likely to bear more brunt of water shortage.
We are planning to supply water to these areas from public wells during the water crisis.”
