15 NDFB members held in Assam
In a major breakthrough, the Assam police on Friday arrested 15 newly recruited NDFB cadres who were trying to cross over to Burma for arms training.
Sibsagar superintendent of police Bijay Kuligam told this newspaper that acting on a specific tip off, police apprehended these NDFB cadres who were travelling in a nightsuper bus from Kohima in Nagaland to a place Tizit, adjoining the international border with Burma. The police, which was following the movement of these cadres, arrested them when the bus entered Assam on route to Mon district in Nagaland. The police intercepted the bus in which they were travelling, at Namtola in Sibsagar district. Pointing out that most of them are school dropouts, Mr Kuligam said that insurgent groups area using the route of Nagaland to send their cadres to Burma for arms training.
Informing that IK Songbijit faction of NDFB had recruited these cadres from Kokrajhar, Udalguri and Baksha area of Bodoland Territorial Council, Mr Kuligam said that they also apprehended Udla a hardcore NDFB cadre who was the in-charge of recruitment in the outfit. The NDFB cadres, who were asked to reach Kohima the capital of Nagaland on their own, were remanded to police custody for further investigation. Security sources which was instrumental in trapping this batch of NDFB recruits said that arrested boys were kept enrolled in some works for past two months at Kohima before taking them to Burma. Pointing that it is a modus operandi of outfit to check the orientation of newly recruited boys, sour-ces said that some more boys and girls might have been taken to Nagaland.
