155 hurt in dahi handi revelry
One hundred and fifty-five govindas were injured during the Gokulashtami celebrations in the city on Friday, according to the BMC. Around 41 govindas were taken to KEM Hospital in Parel and over a 17 were admitted to Sion Hospital. Last year, 250 govindas were injured during the festivities.
A 22-year-old youth from Malad got electrocuted from an overhead cable and was rushed to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra, where his condition was said to be serious. All others were stable and 37 were sent home by evening.
Aniket Patil (14) collapsed after a shock from a live wire while going on stage for a cultural programme for dahi handi celebrations at Prabhadevi.
A Dharavi resident, Joseph Kole (42), was a part of the support circle of the pyramid at Dharavi, when others from the upper levels fell on him, breaking his anklebone.
Nikesh Damedar, (18), fell from the third tier of an eight tier pyramid, sustaining a deep cut on the back of his head. Nikesh’s friend, who accompanied him to Sion hospital said, “Everyone was getting off the pyramid and there was no one behind Nikesh when he fell on his back.”
A group of around 50 volunteers from the Ravindra Bhosale Mitra Mandal decided to help the injured govindas. “We have been taking the patients to the hospital as soon as they hurt themselves,” said a volunteer.
In addition to the city, 20 dahi handi participants suffered injuries while attempting to scale the human pyramid in Thane on Friday.
