17 industries spew highly toxic gases
Responding to Ram Jethmalani’s query that India was listed fifth amongst the poisonous gas emitting nations in the world, Union minister of environment Jairam Ramesh admitted that the National Ambient Air Quality Standards had been notified in respect to twelve pollutants. These included gases like sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide and ammonia .
The minister admitted that seventeen categories of polluting industries were spewing these highly toxic gases in the atmosphere. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has recently listed seventeen categories of highly polluting industries emitting these highly toxic gases in the atmosphere
He also admitted that the CPCB had collected ground water samples from 14 locations and soil samples from eight locations during 2009 in the vicinity of the Union Carbide India Ltd plant at Bhopal. These tests had revealed the presence of mercury, zinc, manganese and chromium in the soil.
Mr Ramesh also admitted that India’s greenhouse gas emissions had risen from 1.23 billion tones CO2 equivalent in 1994 to 1.73 billion tones CO2 equivalent in 2007 at a compound growth rate of 2.9 per cent.
The biggest rise has been in the waste and cement sectors which accounted for 7.3 per cent and 6 per cent CAGR respectively.
