2 cops among 6 hurt in Ulfa grenade attack in Guwahati

At least six persons, including two constables of home guard, were injured in a grenade attack by suspected Ulfa rebels in one of the most crowded locality of Guwahati near the Paltanbazar police station on Sunday.

The additional director general of police (law and order) A.P. Rawat who was on the spot said that two police constables and four civilians were injured in the grenade attack. “We have suspicion on Ulfa though clear picture will emerge only after the investigation,” he added.
Two home guard constables who were critically wounded in the grenade attack have been shifted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital where his condition was stated to be critical.
The police said that incident took place at about 8 pm when two motorcycle borne youth lobbed a grenade targeting the two police constables who were on gate duty at the Paltanbazar police station.
Four pedestrians who were passing through the area also came under the impact of the grenade blast.
The assailants managed to escape unchallenged.
The incident took place a day after Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi announced that all the district and police administration have been alerted in view of the intelligence feed back on Ulfa targeting to carry out subversive activities in the run up to Independence Day. Mr Gogoi had suspended his South Africa visit immediately after the grenade attack in North Lakhimpur.
Meanwhile, massive combing operations have been launched in and around Guwahati to nab the Ulfa rebels. Police is also trying to identify the motorcycle used by assailants through the footage of CCTV camera in nearby areas. (EOM)
