2 hospital staff held for raping disabled woman
Two male hospital staffers have been arrested for the rape of a mentally challenged woman in Bhosari, a suburb of Pimpri-Chinchwad in Pune. One of the accused is said to have committed the crime, while the other abetted it. The police is still awaiting DNA and medical reports to ascertain who committed and who abetted the crime.
According to the police, the 30-year-old woman from Ahmednagar district was staying in a shelter home, Snehalay, there. She was transferred to similar shelter in Mulshi in rural Pune and finally shifted to Bhosari. “The woman had started experiencing fever and weakness and was therefore admitted to a civic-run hospital in Bhosari on August 26. A woman staffer from the shelter home was deputed to look after her in the hospital. On August 28, the woman staffer stepped out to arrange for their food. The two accused Shailesh Dagdu Jadhav (40) and Pramod Mandekar (28) took her to the elevator and then raped her,” said senior PI SD Kekane of Bhosari police station. On Saturday, the girl was discharged and brought back to the shelter home but officials there observed her to be in a very disturbed state of mind. “She was unable to explain what happened and suddenly broke down. She then narrated the incident with a combination of sign language and words and the shelter home people then immediately informed the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). After a quick internal inquiry, the two staffers were suspended and we were also informed,” said another police officer. Jadhav and Mandekar were immediately arrested and remanded to police custody till September 7. They have been booked under sections 109 (abetment) and 376 D (intercourse by member of management in a hospital) of the IPC. After learning of the incident, women from several political parties staged protests outside the police station demanding the accused be handed to them for “swift justice.”
