2 key suspects may turn witnesses
At least two key suspects in the multi-crore NRHM scam of Uttar Pradesh (UP) are likely to turn witnesses. Sources in the CBI, the agency which is probing the scam, on Wednesday maintained that the move will further strengthen the case against the key accused in the case.
Sources said, “Two key suspects, including a high-ranking official of the state government, are likely to turn witnesses in the case. The agency, after filling chargesheet in the case, will record their statements under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which will be considered as evidence in the court of law.”
The agency, which questioned two top representatives of a private firm on Wednesday, is now planning to question senior officials of seven private organisations, which were awarded contracts under the scheme, next week. “At least 15 officials of private firms are expected to be questioned by the agency next week,” sources said.
“Probe by the agency has revealed that the family welfare department of the state government awarded contracts to certain private companies on the basis of forged documents also. The agency is now probing the role of government officials in awarding these contracts. Officials of private firms will be asked specific questions about the role played by public servants in awarding these contracts during the questioning next week,” sources said.
