2 killed in WB panchayat poll violence
Burdwan (WB): A CPI(M) gram panchayat candidate's husband was today killed and another party candidate beaten up allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters in Burdwan district in the second phase panchayat elections in West Bengal, police said.
Mohammed Sheikh Hasmat, husband of Monowara Bibi who is a candidate of Madhudanga gram panchayat under Jamuria police station, was killed when bombs were hurled at him while he was on his way to cast ballot.
Soon, villagers caught hold of one of the attackers, Raj Kumar Khora, and allegedly beat him to death.
In another incident, CPI(M) candidate for Panuria gram panchayat Siddhartha Banerjee was injured when he was beaten up in his locality.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) MP Banshagopal Chowdhury alleged that three booths had been captured by Trinamool workers in Jemari area. Three districts - Burdwan, East Midnapore and Hooghly - are going to polls during the second phase of 5-phase three-tier panchayat elections.
