2 shot dead while hoisting tricolour
The patriotic spirits of Independence Day turned bloody in Bihar’s Bhabua, where two men were shot dead during the hoisting of the tricolour while the high spirits in Samastipur flowed not from patriotic sentiments but from liquor shops kept open in defiance of the dry day.
At Bhabua town in Kaimur district, a petrol pump owner, Rajo Singh, and his nephew, Binod Singh, were gunned down when they were hoisting the tricolour along with a group of people near the Mundeshwari cinema hall. While Rajo died on the spot, Binod was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital. Angry people blocked the town’s main road in protest for over two hours.
The police said an old rivalry between two groups over the land of the petrol pump seemed to be the reason behind the murders and that criminals who fired the shots had prepared well to kill the two men. Two people were arrested in this connection and an inquiry was on, the police added.
In Samastipur district, liquor shops were kept open all through the Independence Day and people were seen purchasing bottles of wine despite the police patrolling these areas several times.

‘Women power to affect polls’
Age Correspondent
New Delhi
After scripting social engineering of his own by creating the concept of “Mahadalit”, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar now believes that development will take precedence over caste considerations in the state’s forthcoming elections later this year.
Mr Kumar also hopes that the increasing empowerment of women after they were given 50 per cent reservation of seats in local bodies and Panchayats will also influence the poll outcome.
