2-tier selection system for film awards soon
The Union information and broadcasting ministry has decided to restructure the National Film Awards by introducing a two-tier selection system for the awards.
The changes have been carried out following recommendations by an expert committee headed by eminent film maker Shyam Benegal for up-gradation of the National F
ilm Awards. The mandate given to the committee, constituted by the information and broadcasting ministry was to re-invent the National Film Awards with a view to making them more contemporary and acceptable. While one jury will select films at regional level, the next level will be central jury. It will comprise of chairperson plus 10 members, of whom five would be the chairpersons of the five regional juries.
The committee has also recommended that three new award categories be instituted in place of the current best screenplay and dialogues award, namely, award for adapted screenplay award, for original screenplay and award for dialogues. An award for background score has been introduced, in addition to an existing award for best music.
Sources stated that the selections for National Film Awards for 2009, scheduled to take place later this year, will be implemented under the new awards system. The committee has also recommended the establishment of five regional panels for pre selection of films, one each for each region of the country. The cash prize for several award in both feature films and non-feature films categories have also been increased.
Sources stated that each regional panel would comprise a chairperson and one member (both of whom would be from outside the region) and three other members from with the region.
