20 travelling on train roof killed after it hits a bridge
More than 20 youths, who had come to Bareilly to attend an ITBP recruitment camp, were killed while travelling on the roof of the Himgiri Express Tuesday.
The incident occurred near Roza station in Shahjahanpur district when the youths, seated on the rooftop, reportedly banged against the Hathauda overbridge near the station. Over two dozen youths were seriously injured and were admitted to the local hospital.
Eyewitnesses claimed the deaths occurred after the travellers came into contact with a high tension wire overhead, but railway officials denied this.
Other ITBP aspirants travelling by the same train then went on a rampage at Roza railway station, burning two AC coaches of the same train.
Parts of the station were also set on fire. Fire tenders were rushed there to douse the blaze. The rampage was continuing till late Tuesday evening.
A lack of security personnel at the station worsened the situation. Special DGP Brijlal, however, told reporters that the number of casualties was three, and the identity of the deceased was not immediately known.
