2G: CBI's case is becoming weak each day, says Raja
A Raja, former Telecom Minister and prime accused in 2G spectrum scam, on Friday took a dig at CBI in a Delhi court by saying that day by day the case of the agency was getting weak.
The remark was made by the DMK MP when some advocates appearing for the other accused raised objections to the inaudible arguments advanced by Special Public Prosecutor U U Lalit before Special CBI Judge O P Saini.
When advocate D P Singh, appearing for telecom company Unitech Wireless, asked Lalit to make submission in a manner so that they can hear it, Raja took the opportunity to make the comment against CBI.
"It is because day by day their case is going weak", Raja said.
Singh interrupted the proceedings on the ground that the submission made by Lalit was inaudible and said "Mr Lalit, at least yesterday you were a bit louder. Now, your voice is going low."
Senior advocate Majid Memon, appearing for Swan Telecom promotor Shahid Balwa, had also raised objection twice while requesting the judge to make a provision for microphone by Monday.
They even proposed installing of a screen in the courtroom to those seated at the far end to see the proceedings. This was the second day of arguments on the charges being pressed by CBI.
Lalit told the court that during grant of dual-technology licences to existing service providers, Reliance was unduly favoured as against Tata so as to keep some spectrum safe for Swan Telecom.
He said "Tata, which was an existing licencee, sought to have dual technology. Its file was delayed by 35 days and it was shown that Swan Telecom has been issued licence for Delhi circle. Tata Tele Services Ltd, having priority over Swan Telecom in terms of dual technology approvals, was unreasonably deprived of allocation of spectrum for Delhi circle."
Lalit said Swan was allowed to ink an intra-circle roaming agreement with BSNL, which allowed them to operate in all circles on BSNL's network without themselves having the infrastructure to do so.
He reiterated that Swan was a front company of Reliance as is evident from even the letter dated March 1, 2007, from Reliance to HDFC wherein it is said that Swan Telecom is its group company.
