2G: ED may grill Kani in Tihar

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing the 2G spectrum scam, may question Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK supremo M. Karunanidhi, in connection with alleged transfer of `200 crores to Chennai-based Kalaignar TV by a company linked telecom promoter Shahid Balwa, next week. According to sources, statement of Ms Kanimozhi will

be recorded at Tihar prisons as she is in judicial custody. The ED officials are also expected to record statement of Sharad Kumar, managing director Kalaignar TV, very soon, sources said.
“The Central probe agency will record their statements under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED is also expected to question Kanimozhi about the alleged donations made by certain telecom companies, which are under the scanner, to Tamil Maiyam, an NGO in which DMK MP is on the board of directors,” sources said.
After questioning Ms Kanimozhi and Mr Kumar, sources said, other accused named by the CBI in its supplementary chargesheet would also be questioned by the ED. The CBI supplementary chargesheet, filed on April 25, named six accused including Kanimozhi, Sharad Kumar, Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa’s cousin Asif Balwa, Rajeev Aggarwal, directors of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd, and Karim Morani of Cineyug Films.
“Investigation by the CBI has already established that accused A. Raja (former telecom minister), Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar, both stakeholders in Kalaignar TV, accepted and received an illegal gratification of `200 crores in Chennai based TV channel from other accused associated with Shahid Balwa,” sources said. The ED has also initiated the process of evaluating properties owned by all the 2G accused (named by the CBI in its both chargesheet). After completing the process of evaluation of properties, the agency will begin the process of attachment also, sources said.
