2G: SC cancels 122 licences, PC gets relief
In a major ruling on the 2G spectrum allocation case, the Supreme Court leaves to trial court to decide on probe against home minister P. Chidambaram, besides cancelling the grant of 122 licences.
Further, the apex court ruled that the trial court must decide on the probe against Home Minister within two weeks. The SC refused to direct the CBI to probe the alleged role of Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum case.
SC holds that 122 licences for 2G spectrum were granted in arbitrary and unconstitutional manner and urged telecom regulator TRAI to make fresh recommendation on grant of 2G licences.
The allocation of spectrum have to be done through auction within four months, the SC bench said. Also, the bench instructed the CBI to give status report on the investigation to the CVC.
