2G scam: CBI to begin probe of DoT officials
The CBI will soon start questioning certain serving officials of the Department of Telecommunication in connection with its probe into the 2G spectrum scam.
According to sources, the agency has so far questioned majority of the former top officials of the DoT who allegedly played crucial role in 2G allotment. Now the agency
wants to question certain serving officials of the DoT also, sources said. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has already started issuing summons for questioning to serving top officials of the DoT.
The CBI is likely to question R.K. Chandolia, personal secretary to former telecom minister A. Raja, very soon.
Having already registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against unknown officials of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and unknown private companies in connection with the award of new telecom licenses in 2008, the ED has already issued summons to him.
The CBI has also registered a case saying there was large-scale corruption in the allocation of 2G radio spectrum licences last year.
“On the basis of questioning of top officials of certain private telecom companies, who were in the race for 2G allotment, the CBI has now decided to call Mr Chandolia and other top DoT officials for questioning”, sources said. Both agencies are also planning to question Mr A. Raja separately in connection with their probe, sources said.
Some senior DoT officers allegedly granted unified access services licenses to a few selected companies at nominal rate by rejecting the applications of the others without any valid reasons thereby causing wrongful loss to the government and corresponding wrongful gain to private persons or companies, sources said.
