2G scam: CBI points finger at Maran, seeks time for probe
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its status report to the Supreme Court on Wednesday pointed finger at textile minister Dayanidhi Maran for sitting on Aircel’s application for 2G license and forcing it be sold to Malaysian company Maxis.
The CBI on Wednesday told the apex court bench of justice G.S. Singhvi and justice A.K. Ganguly that it needed more time to complete its investigation in the 2G spectrum scam. The court was told that the investigative agency would require time till August 31. There are allegations that Maxis Communication bought 74 per cent stake in Aircel when Maran was the telecom minister and the company was later allotted more circles to operate.
Maxis Communication, through its subsidiary Astro, invested around Rs 600 crores in Sun DTH belonging to Sun TV Network owned by Maran's family, it has been alleged. Maran held the telecom portfolio from May 2004 to May 2007.
