2G scam, Tamils issue will work against DMK in polls: Vaiko
The 2G spectrum scam and other issues like the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils will work against the ruling DMK in the Tamil Nadu assembly polls due in May, MDMK chief Vaiko said on Saturday.
While 2010 was the year of scams with the 2G spectrum allocation scam at the top, 2011 would be a year of changes in the political arena, he told reporters here.
Describing the spectrum allocation scam as the "monster of all scams," Vaiko said even the common man was aware of the issue.
"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been let down in this issue by former Union Minister A Raja who had not heeded the advice of various departments including that of Prime Minister's office on the spectrum allocation," he said.
On the CBI probe into the spectrum scam, Vaiko said the investigating agency was known for pursuing some cases vigorously and ensuring conviction but it was also known for "cover-ups and allowing the accused to go scot-free."
"People are dissatisfied with the DMK rule. The AIADMK alliance will win the polls. The AIADMK-MDMK alliance will work to overthrow the DMK hegemony," Vaiko said.
He also hit out at the Congress, alleging that its leaders were involved in the Adarsh and Commonwealth scams.
On alliances, he said his party's ties with AIADMK was intact and declined to comment on "speculative and hypothetical questions" like whether he would stay with Jayalalithaa if her party forged an alliance with the Congress.
He had time and again charged the Congress-led UPA with aiding the Sri Lankan Army in its fight against Ltte in the last leg of the civil war.
Vaiko said Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse "cannot go scot-free" with regard to human rights violations allegedly committed by the Lankan army against Tamil civilians and said the international Tamil diaspora "would not spare him."
He said the issue would have its repercussions on DMK's poll prospects. He charged DMK President and chief minister M Karunanidhi with doing little to stop the war or mitigate the sufferings of the ethnic Tamils.
