Ahead of appearing before the special CBI court on Friday, DMK Rajya Sabha MP and Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi’s daughter Ms Kanimozhi exuded confidence that she would fight the 2G spectrum scam case legally and come out of it clean.

After the arrest of former telecommunications minister A. Raja, the noose seems to be tightening around her.

However it remains to be seen, if she would be taken into custody on Friday when the special Judge O.P. Saini takes up the matter.

Talking exclusively to this newspaper in Delhi, on Thursday, Ms Kanimozhi said, “ I have full faith in our judicial system. What-ever the court decides, I will accept. I am positive that truth will ultimately prevail.”

She also said she was not applying for anticipatory bail. When asked if she would clear all the charges against her, she sounded positive while replying, “It is a very, very serious charge and I am very sure that we will come out of it and I will come out of it clean.”

When asked if she had the support of the family in her fight, she answered in the affirmative. However, her half-brother and Union minister Mr M.K. Alagiri neither called on her nor spoke to her over the phone, even though three union ministers of state from the DMK namely Gandhi Selvan, Palanimanickam and Napoleon called on her to express solidarity.

Her husband Aravindan, son Aditya and mother Rajathi Ammal are camping in Delhi eagerly awaiting the outcome of Friday’s court proceedings.

According to sources, other DMK MPs are to descend on the national capital late in the evening to demonstrate camaraderie. They are likely to converge at senior DMK leader and MP Mr T.R. Balu’s residence before leaving for the court in the morning.

Sources also revealed that noted advocate Ram Jethmalani will be Ms Kanimozhi’s counsel in the case. Contrary to speculations, her father Mr Karunanidhi is not arriving in Delhi to be with her in her hour of crisis.

Ms Kanimozhi along with four others has been named as co-accused by the CBI in its supplementary charge sheet, filed in the special court in the 2G spec-trum allocation case on April 25. The four co-accused are Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar, Karim Morani of Cineyug Films, Rajiv Agarwal of Kusegaon Realty and Asif Balwa (brother of Shahid Usman Balwa).

Taking cognisance of the supplementary chargesheet filed by the CBI, Patiala House court special judge O.P. Saini asked the five accused to appear before it on May 6. Besides, ED has issued summons to Ms Kanimozhi and these four co-accused under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. They are likely to appear before the agency next week.

PTI adds: “There is absolutely no question of party acting under any pressure. CBI is investigating the case under the Supreme Court monitoring...we feel our ties with DMK have continued for years seeing good and bad times. I do not think the on-going investigations in the 2G issue will have any adverse impact on Congress-DMK ties,” party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan told reporters here.

SC talks tough on 2G

The Supreme Court said no person, irrespective of their chair and wealth, would be spared in 2G investigation and slammed I-T department for the slow probe.

The court also described as “mind boggling” the figures of the transactions mentioned in the first report submitted by the I-T department, observing it has not seen “so many zeros in our life”.

Directing the I-T department to be quicker and not to treat in an “ordinary way” the cases relating to the 2G scam, the court said it wants a “result”.

Kanimozhi along with four others has been named as co-accused by the CBI in its supplementary chargesheet, filed in the special court in the 2G spectrum case on April 25. The ED has also issued summons.
