3rd top aide of Kalmadi held
The CBI on Sunday arrested M. Jayachandran, sacked joint director-general (accounts and finance) of the Commonwealth Games organising committee, in connection with alleged irregularities in the Queen’s Baton Relay in London last year.
Mr Jayachandran is the third senior aide of OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi to be arrested by the agency.
Six days back it had arrested two other sacked top OC officials — T.S. Darbari, joint director-general (revenue & marketing), and Sanjay Mohindroo, deputy director-general (marketing). They were also arrested on charges of forgery and cheating over alleged irregularities in the baton relay.
Sources said Mr Jayachandran was arrested Sunday after several rounds of questioning by the CBI, adding that searches were continuing at his residence.
The CBI has already filed two cases involving UK-based A.M. Films and AM Car & Van Hire and former OC officials. Mr Jayachandran was also questioned by the Enforcement Directorate over alleged foreign exchange violations.
“Mr Jayachandran told interrogators that he did not have any role in finalising the deal,” the sources said. They said he claimed it was the OC top brass which had played a crucial role in finalising the deal with the London-based firm as well as in financial transactions.
There is a possibility that top OC figures, including chairman Suresh Kalmadi, might be questioned by the CBI and ED over these alleged QBR irregularities and other CWG contracts.
