4 days after teacher's murder, school reopens

Four days after the gruesome murder of teacher Uma Maheswari by a Class IX student, St. Mary’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School resumed classes on Tuesday.

The school had remained closed following the shocking incident that shook the teaching community and parents across the state.

The boys assembled at the school on Armenian Street at around 8.30 am and the classes went well, said a school official.

After a brief note by headmaster Mr Siby Mathew, the students went back to their classrooms. A special counselling session was held for Class IX and Class X students separately on Tuesday.

A total of 300 boys attended the session conducted by psychotherapist Mr Joseph Jeyaraj.

Mr Joseph told Deccan Chronicle said that he had tried to rate the students to assess their mental condition. “From ‘not fine’, ‘somewhat fine’ to ‘fine’, the boys gave different answers.

Some boys said that they were ‘not fine’ because a student killed their teacher. While a few replied that they were ‘somewhat fine’, the rest said that they were ‘fine’ and they would have to move on,” he said.

He added that the Class IX students were depressed. “But they said that they would move on. The sessions will continue for some time,” he added. Headmaster Mr Siby Mathew and Correspondent Mr Deva Joe were present during the session.
