4 get life for murder of witness
Four persons were sentenced to life imprisonment by a district court for murdering an accused-turned-key prosecution witness in the kidnapping of city-based shoe baron Partha Roy Burman.
Additional chief judicial magistrate of Barasat court in North 24-Parganas district Chaitali Chattopadhyay sentenced the four to life imprisonment for murdering Rafiq Ahmed, at whose house Burman was confined for eight days after being abducted on July 23, 2001. Sirajul Mallik, Pintu Mallik, Belu Mondal and Nazrul Mondal were sentenced after being convicted on Wednesday by the judge for the murder under section 302 of IPC apart from other charges like conspiracy.

Maha to move SC on ‘Best of 5’ directive

June 24: The state government has once again put the fate of lakhs of students in the city into uncertainty by postponing the admission to the first year of junior colleges. This comes after its decision to move the Supreme Court against the high court verdict that quashed the state’s “Best of Five” policy.
The Bombay high court on Wednesday had thrown out the Maharashtra state secondary and higher secondary education board’s “Best of Five” formula. Chief minister Ashok Chavan on Thursday said that the state would try and get a positive order soon after the apex court resumes session from July 5.

2nd Russian warship launched
Moscow, June 24: Russia launched the second of three stealth frigates for the Indian Navy under $1.6 billion deal inked in July 2006.
The launching ceremony of the missile frigate Tarkash (Quiver) in Russia's Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, was attended by senior Russian and Indian naval officials, state-owned Yantar shipyard said in a release.
The first of three Project 11356 (modified Krivak III) frigates, named the Teg (Sword), was launched in last November.
The third frigate, Trikand (Bow) is due to be delivered in 2011-12. —PTI

IIMC will revamp its curriculum

June 24: Indian Institutes of Mass Communications, the premier journalism institute in the country, will soon revamp its course curriculum and reinvent itself for the needs of present day media and entertainment market needs.
At a meeting held recently, Union information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni has asked the journalism institute to prepare a roadmap to fulfil the needs of the growing media and entertainment industry. Sources stated that the IIMC has been asked to include varied subjects like animation, digitisation and restoration of films, developmental journalism and corporate communications and management in its curriculum.
The minister is also understood to have instructed the IIMC to provide the latest infrastructure in terms of studios, editing equipment and recording rooms for its students.
