4 percussionists die, 8 hurt in van mishap
Four persons from Alappuzha district were killed and eight others critically injured as the minivan in which a group of percussionists from Muhamma was traveling fell into a gorge at Vellikkulam near Vagamon on Tuesday.
The incident took place at 7 am while the group of PKR Shinkarimelam were on their way home after a programme at Elappara Pulikkanam Idukkupara temple in Idukki district as part of the Sivarathri festival.
The dead were identified as Binu, 19, Sagesh, 17, Sruthiraj, 14, belonging to Muhamma panchayat and Manikkuttan, 40, a native of Thannirmukkam Panchayt.
The victims were traveling in a van of the MKP Travels. The van fell into a depth of about 259 feet, resulting in an extremely difficult rescue operation.
It broke into three parts and the people, or their bodies, were thrown out to the different portions of the gorge “ police said.
The bodies were identified by 11am and sent to Kottayam medical college for post mortem. All legal procedures were completed at 2pm and bodies were brought to Puthanangadi market and kept there for the public to pay homage by at 4.30 pm.
Manikkuttan was the make-up man in the group while others were percussionists. Of the three deceased, Sagesh and Binu were full-time percussionists. Sruthiraj was a ninth standard student at the Muhamma Sanskrit School.
According to Muhamma police, the injured were admitted to the Kottayam medical college and the Pala general hospital. The rescue operation was still going on, as it started several hours after the incident happened, due to locational disadvantages.
As many as 22 people led by Pravaeen, master percussionist, were in the van during the incident.
