4 SP MLAs to probe Azam
Four Samajwadi legislators in a team of seven members will probe the authenticity of a sting operation, shown on a TV channel, indicting senior SP minister Azam Khan for interfering in police functioning in the Muzaffarnagar riots.
An all-party committee set up by the Speaker of the UP Assembly includes Satish Kumar Nigam of Samajwadi Party, who will head the panel, Mohammed Irfan (SP), Sangram Yadav (SP), Brijlal Sonekar (SP), Amarpal Sharma (BSP), Manish Asija (BJP) and Dilnawaz Khan (Congress).
Mr Pradeep Kumar Dubey, principal secretary of the Vidhan Sabha, said that the committee will systematically probe the veracity of the sting operation and probe the CD and other documents, collect documentary and verbal evidences.
The committee will have the powers to use self-discretion to probe into the concerned issues.
The committee is expected to submit its report before the conclusion of the first session of Vidhan Sabha in 2014. Following the sting operation by the TV channel, the state government had faced a fresh round of attacks in the monsoon session of the state Assembly.
“The intentions of the state government are clear from the number of members from the ruling party who have been included in the committee. Will these members have the guts to give a report indicting Azam Khan?” asked Leader of the Opposition Swami Prasad Maurya of BSP.
